Corporate Sustainability

Reducing Aircraft Noise

Effective and sensible land-use planning regulations are essential elements for achieving a balanced approach to noise impact reduction. TNT Airways has directly contributed to the development of operational flight procedures that have been the subject of many simulations and have been optimised. Our approach is unique in a sense that we have established land-use planning regulations to minimise aircraft noise instead of promoting traffic flow.
In addition to reducing aircraft noise, we have developed our ground operations with a view of attaining environmental friendliness. The electrical generators are soundproofed and the ground use of turbines is limited to twenty minutes per aircraft.

TNT is committed to constant environmental improvements, and has since years been a pioneer in the industry with the acquisition of a fleet of BAe146.

Its entire fleet is currently fully compliant with ICAO Annex 16 - Chapter III.

Corporate Social Responsibility

"For most companies the essence of sustainability seems to be avoiding liabilities - not doing bad things. For us sustainability is our ongoing search for opportunities to actively do good things and then report on our progress." - Peter Bakker, CEO TNT N.V.

As a global business, TNT strives to improve the social and environmental impact it has on the communities in which it operates around the world. TNT has a distinctive approach to sustainability. Its philosophy means that complying with laws and regulations is not an acceptable goal. The conviction that survival in the long term depends not only on generating profit but in demonstrating to communities around the world that these can trust TNT as a good corporate citizen, a good corporate neighbour and an environmentally responsible operator, is the driver behind TNT's CSR program.

TNT Airways aspires to be a leader in Environmental Management within the Airlines industry by promoting a positive environmental culture to our employees, our internal customers, our neighbours and our subcontractors.
TNT Airways is committed to a sustainable-development approach.  This approach stems for the policy of the TNT Group, which has instituted a programme of Corporate Sustainability designed to improve its social, environmental and economic impact on communities all over the world.
TNT Airways objectives are defined in its Environmental Policy :

  • To comply with the environmental regulations imposed by the authorities and pro-actively act upon applicable new legislation;
  • To implement an Environmental Management System for the sustained improvement of its long-term environmental performance;
  • To define the goals and objectives for all significant environmental aspects with aim of reducing the negative environmental impacts and preventing pollution;
  • To instill awareness of environmental issues among its staff, and the various stakeholders with which it deals directly or indirectly;
  • To train its staff to ensure that their working conditions are appropriate from the standpoints of health and safety, working atmosphere and the environment.

Our resolve is to show our employees, our internal customers, our neighbour and our subcontractors that we are responsible in our environmental approach.
In 2007 TNT Airways has obtained the IS0 14001 certification for its environmental management system.

Code of Business Principles

The management of TNT Express understood early, that for a service provider, people are the heart of the organisation. For that reason, a Code of Business Principles has been developed. This Code reflects the personal standards that every single employee brings to his work and underpins a common culture of openness, integrity and accountability.

A key range of global commitments have been embedded into the organisation, including the ten principles enshrined in the UN Global Compact and the eight principles of Corporate Citizenship developed in the World Economic Forum. These set out a range of obligations that are accepted throughout TNT Express worldwide in relation to corporate governance, human rights, labour rights and environmental stewardship.

TNT Express constantly monitors the economic, social and environmental effect of its operations around the globe. These are reported and reviewed monthly and action plans put in place where necessary to minimise or remove any negative impacts.

World Food Programme

The company is committed to promoting and supporting both global and local social responsibility campaigns. In December 2002, TNT Express' parent company TNT N.V. and the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) launched a partnership to help fight world hunger together. The partnership with WFP signifies a unique, impressive humanitarian commitment on a global scale.

TNT Express commitment to helping those in immediate need was also demonstrated at the beginning of 2005 when employees based around the world worked in partnership with an enormous variety of relief agencies under the UN umbrella organising the movement of emergency humanitarian assistance, food aid and medicines following the Tsunami.

This belief in the key role of the industry in such crises made TNT Express one of the founders of the World Economic Forum Logistics and Transportation Corporate Citizenship Initiative.
